Academies were introduced under the last Labour government with an aim to improve pupil performance. Originally, only failing schools were allowed to become academies, these were called sponsored academies. However, with the introduction of the Academies Act in 2010, this enabled all maintained schools to become academies. These schools are called converter academies.

If you are an existing academy or Multi-Academy Trust and are thinking of becoming a sponsor, here we outline the work and process involved and the different funding levels available.
Schools in special measures and/or designated coasting schools can be compelled to become Academies by being issued with a directive academy order by the Department for Education. These schools do not apply to become an Academy.
